The park itself is open for general use and viewing. In addition, the City of Ferndale employs tour guides for the Pioneer Park cabins each year from May 15 through September 15, 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (closed Mondays and for special events).

These optional tours are $5 for adults, $3 for children ages 6-12, free for under 6. Cash or checks accepted. To attend a tour during normal hours, check in with tour guides at the Parker House General Store.

For large groups, Ferndale Heritage Society can accommodate tours at special times that have been previously scheduled in advance of the tour date only. Please call 360-384-6461 for more information.

The Ferndale Heritage Society operates its School Tours Education Program for local school groups each spring. The program introduces students in second, third or fourth grades to pioneer life, with hands-on activities through five authentic log cabins located at Pioneer Park in Ferndale.

Groups will visit:

  • The Granary to learn about logging and land clearing, planting, harvesting and grinding grain

  • The Shields House to learn how the pioneers made candles to light their cabins

  • The Jenni House to do the chores pioneer children did, including making bread, washing clothes, cleaning house, sawing wood, gathering eggs and planting a garden

  • The Post Office to learn how mail was delivered in the early days of our state

  • The One Room School House to learn about classrooms in the "Good Old Days"

  • The General Store may be opened to learn about storekeeping, if time permits

  • A story teller will spin tales of early Whatcom County settlers. Before the children depart, they also get to eat a roll created by students in the Jenni House.

Groups may choose a morning or afternoon session, which lasts 2 hours.

The cost is $7.00 per student. Teachers and adult chaperones are free.
